Modern life doesn’t place a primacy on being still with silence.
Our family and friends often think it’s weird when we, yogic practitioners, want to take time to consciously be quiet.
This has a lot to do with the modern push to go go go, and do, do, do. It’s led to the fact that few people feel comfortable being still in silence.
Many people feel anxious being in silence with themselves, let alone with others. We feel we have to “fill the space.”
Some people just go to sleep when there’s silence.
For the yogi, however, being alone with silence isn’t filled with terror.
The yogi doesn’t feel all alone in the world.
